Also called the Beehive Bothy, after the shape of the hut. A single-room timber shelter in the heart of Kilgallioch Forest, standing directly on the Southern Upland Way. Sleeps up to 6 on benches with more room on the floor. Outdoor fire area and picnic bench; no toilet and no stove indoors. Not an MBA bothy — maintained by the Dumfries and Galloway Council Ranger Service.
The Beehive sits on the Southern Upland Way itself, with the path passing the door: roughly 12 km from New Luce and 19.5 km from Bargrennan, so most people arrive on foot mid-way through the Castle Kennedy to Bargrennan section. There is no vehicle access and no water tap — the surrounding ground is forestry and open moor, so treat any water you take from the burns. The Laggangarn standing stones are a few hundred metres along the Way to the north-east. Very exposed, very remote, with dark skies and long views over the fells; there is no booking system, so carry a tent in case it is full.
